The Alaskan Malamute is a sled dog bred by the Malemiut natives of Alaska. Their excellent health, character and working qualities have won them admirers all over the world. And the Malamute is also a symbol of the state.
Alaskan Malamute breed: characteristics and description
The Alaskan Malamute dog breed has a sort of square body, but at the same time, it is compact, with a thick, long and coarse coat. The head is also coarse, but the look of brown eyes is soft and kind. Generally speaking, this is not a vicious dog.

The color of a Malamute can range from light gray to black, including intermediate shades, and red color is also uncommon. White undercoats run along the entire underside of the body. Especially beautiful are pure-white Alaskan Malamutes.
It’s a pretty big dog:
- Males up to 64 cm at the withers, weigh up to 38 kg
- bitches – up to 59 cm, weight – up to 34 kg
However, this framework is very tentative because the main requirement for a dog is strength and endurance.

Like the Husky, the Malamute’s character is quite strong and requires education from an early age. I must repeat: there is almost no malamute in a malamute, its mere imposing appearance may cause a flight, but sometimes the dog snaps back. The North does not forgive anyone’s weakness: neither a human nor a dog, so we must conform to the genes. Just like the Husky, the Malamute can disobey you. It is quite a complex dog, which must be taken into account.

But if you have several dogs of other breeds, you can say with confidence that it is the Malamute that will become the leader of the pack. But as a guard dog, he failed, and the course of protective guard service can break their psyche.
The Malamute needs serious loads as this breed has been pulling sleds and carrying not easy loads all its existence. It is desirable to occupy it in any dog sport. In addition, the dog is far from being stupid, it also needs to train its brain.

Keeping a Malamute in an apartment is highly undesirable. During heating periods the dog will suffer from heat up to skin diseases. And in a private home, the dog will dig trenches. Malamute is a sociable dog and if you leave it alone for a long time, it will howl, driving mad all those who can’t distance themselves. This breed practically does not bark, but kind of grunts.
The difference between a Husky and an Alaskan Malamute
Malamutes and Huskies are often confused. They are indeed very similar. What, then, are their differences?
- The Malamute is a larger dog with a long and stiff coat. Itgolovaya has a larger coat.
- The Alaskan Malamute is less agile but stronger and more resilient.
- But the main difference is that the Malamute’s forehead has a heart-shaped pattern, and the Husky’s has a downward pointing arrow. Also, the Husky has markings near the eyes of the main color and has a more severe or mischievous, or sly – depending on the situation – look.
